Our November 2012 Member of the Month is Paul & Elizabeth's Restaurant, which has been delighting Northampton diners with their fresh, healthy, and delicious natural foods for 34 years!
From owner Nate Sustick:
In the fall of 1978, my parents Paul & Elizabeth , moved to Northampton to open our restaurant in Thornes Marketplace. Utilizing the basic principals from their late teacher Hiroshi Hayashi, and with the help of family, friends, and the local community, they opened a few months later.
Northampton was merely a microcosm of what it is today, but they, as well as many other local business, paved the way for what Northampton is today. They opened the restaurant with a menu influenced in 'macrobiotic' cooking, focusing on highlighting New England's vegetables, seafood, and grains. I have been fortunate enough to work and grow with the restaurant, and have continued to strive to serve food with these basic principals. Over the years we have added a more extensive beer and wine menu, as well as seafood, desert specials and even a Sunday brunch.
Northampton is a restaurant and art mecca, and we feel very grateful to be part of that today. We work with many of the local farms, such as Good Field farm, The Kitchen Garden, and Old Friends Farms, to bring so much of what the valley offers to our customer's plates. The community of Northampton is uniquely strong, as business owners, politicians, tourists and artists are not only our customers, but our friends.
One of my favourite Northampton events is the Tuesday farmers market behind Thornes Marketplace, that offers music, produce, and locally crafted goods every week through the spring, summer, and fall.
The BID has worked tirelessly in making Northampton one of the most beautiful cities to live, work in, or visit. They have created and sponsored amazing events ranging from Restaurant Week and the fireworks at First Night, to live music and sidewalk art.
